N John Niclaus
A description of the
John/Johannes Niclaus Kistler family is presented in this section. To the best of my knowledge, this family is
not related to the families of either George (A) Kistler or John (B)
Kistler. The spelling of John Niclaus's
family name has not always been consistent.
Except for emphasis, however, the spelling "Kistler" is used
here.
I am most sincerely indebted to
Mrs. Patricia St.Clair Ostwald of Boulder, CO, for most of the material
presented here concerning the John/Johannes Niclaus Kistler family. Additionally, Mr William A Harrison of
Charleston, IL, has furnished information concerning later generations.
*****
John Niclaus Kistler was born
about 1722, perhaps in Richen, Germany.
How and when he came to this country is not known. He and Anna Maria Magdalena Brossman were
married 4/19/1743 by Rev. Casper Stoever at Tulpehocken, Lancaster county (now
Berks county), PA. Anna Maria Magdalena
was the daughter of Frantz Brossman and his wife Anna Clara Elizabeth Rudolph
who emigrated from Waldangelloch, Baden, to Pennsylvania on the ship Friendship
in 1739.
On 5/12/1743, Johannes Kistler
witnessed the laying of the cornerstone of Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchsburg,
Tulpehocken township, Lancaster county (now Berks county), PA.
The known children of John
Niclaus Kistler and his wife Anna Maria Magdalena are as follows:
Maria Magdalena NA born 01/14/1744
Johann Heinrich NB born 04/13/1745
Anna Margaretha NC born 10/14/1748
John George ND born 08/21/1753
Frantz (Francis)
Bastian NE born 08/21/1753
Daniel NF born 05/27/1755
Frederick NG born about 1760
From records of Chirst Lutheran
Church in Stouchsburg, PA, we can easily determine that John Niclaus lived in
that area in the early 1740s. He was
married there and his first two children were baptized there.
In the time period 1753-54,
however, these same church records show that John Niclaus and his family were
living "fifty miles from here (i.e., fifty miles from Stouchsburg) across
the Susquehanna". This is the note
added to the baptismal records for his twin sons John George and Frantz
Bastian.
A look at a map shows that fifty
miles from Stouchsburg and across the Susquehanna River might lie somewhere in
the present day counties of Cumberland, Juniata, Mifflin, Perry, Snyder, Union
or York. However, only Cumberland and
York counties are east and south of the Blue Mountains. In the 1750's, settlements west and north of
the Blue Mountains were few and hazardous.
By 1772, John Niclaus
Kistler was on the tax list in Upper Paxtang township, Lancaster county. He
died in 1778; in April of that year, letters of administration were issued to
his widow Mary in Lancaster county, PA.
Note that in 1785 Dauphin county
was created from Lancaster county.
NA Maria Magdalena
Maria Magdalena was born
1/14/1744 and baptized 2/17/1744 by Rev. Johann Casper Stoever. The records of Rev. J.C. Bucher show that
Maria Magdalena married Jacob Grosjean/Groshong on May 30, 1764; LDS records
show that the marriage occurred in Carlisle, PA, and that Jacob was born in
France about 1730.
In 1769, Jacob Grosjean and his
family were settlers on the west side of the Susquehanna in Buffalo township,
Northumberland county (now Union county), PA.
By 1794, however, Jacob was on the tax list in Harrison county, KY.
Sometime between 1794 and 1800
Jacob's family moved from Kentucky to St. Charles county, MO. Apparently, in
all of these moves Jacob Grosjean/Groshong was accompanied by the family of his
brother-in-law, Daniel Kistler (NF).
Maria is reported to have died
about 1822 in Lincoln county, MO (immediately to the north of St. Charles
county). LDS records show that Jacob,
her husband, died about 1836 in Adams county, IL (on the Mississippi river,
across from Missouri, about 60 miles north of Licnoln county).
Known children of Maria
Magdalena and Jacob Groshong are as follows:
Peter Groshong,
born about 1765 in Carlisle, Cumberland county, PA,
married Elizabeth Williams, born about 1763.
William Groshong, born about
1785.
Judith Groshong, born about 1765.
Jeremiah
Groshong, born about 1771, died 5/17/1858.
John
Groshong, born about 1784.
Samuel
Groshong, born about 1786.
Jacob
Groshong, born about 1790.
Abraham
Groshong, born October 1797.
NB Johann Heinrich
Johann Heinrich was born
4/13/1745 and baptized 4/28/1745 at Christ Church, Stouchsburg, by Rev. Johann
Casper Stoever.
NC Anna Margaretha
Anna Margaretha was born
10/14/1748 and baptized 10/30/1748 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster.
ND John George
John George (twin of Frantz
Bastian - see entry below) was born 8/21/1753 and baptized 6/20/1754 at Christ
Church, Stouchsburg. Sponsors were
Frantz Bastian Brossman and Maria Catherine Keiserin.
Pennsylvania Archives, 5th
series, volume VII, pages 36 and 823, refer to a George Kistler of Lancaster
county. This may be John George
(ND).
NE Frantz Bastian
Frantz (Francis) Bastian (twin
of John George - see entry above) was born 8/21/1753 and baptized 6/20/1754 at
Christ Church, Stouchsburg. Sponsor was
Justina Brossmannin.
In September 1776, in Buffalo
township, Northumberland county, PA, Francis enlisted in the militia. He enlisted with his brother, Frederick
Kistler.
About 1813, Francis was in
Harrrison county, KY, where he was joined by his brother Frederick.
According to Mrs. Patricia
St.Clair Ostwald, Francis appears to have had no children.
NF Daniel
Daniel was born 5/27/1755 and
baptized 1/11/1756 at Christ Church, Stouchsburg, PA.
In 1783-84 and 1786-87, Daniel
appears in the tax list of Buffalo township, Northumberland county, PA. This is the same area where his
brother-in-law, Jacob Grosjean, husband of Mary Magdalena (NA) was living.
By 1796, Daniel was in Harrison
county, KY. Sometime before 1800,
Daniel's family moved from Kentucky to St. Charles county, MO. Apparently, in all of these moves, Daniel
was accompanied by the family of his brother-in-law, Jacob Grosjean.
Daniel married Eva Sophia (born
ca 1756) sometime before 1777. Known
children are as follows:
Daniel NFA born 06/08/1777
Barbara NFB born about 1780
Elizabeth NFC born about 1790
Daniel
died in Callaway township, St. Charles county, MO.
NFA Daniel
Daniel was born 6/8/1777 at
Lykens Valley, Dauphin county, PA. He
was baptized on 6/24/1777 at the Killenger Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church.
NFB Barbara
Barbara was born about 1780. She
married Peter Zumwalt on 10/3/1796 in Harrison county, KY (per Pat
Ostwald). The Zumwalt family
accompanied Daniel (NF) when he moved to St. Charles county, MO, sometime
before 1800.
NFC Elizabeth
Elizabeth was born about
1790. She married Henry Zumwalt (his
second marriage) on 9/20/1808 in St. Charles county, MO (per Pat Ostwald; date
taken from St. Charles County, MO, Marriages 1804-1854).
NG Frederick
Frederick's exact birth date is
not known; he was born about 1760 in Lancaster county, PA. Much of the
information about Frederick comes from Revolutionary War Pension Application
#S161177 and from records of the War.
In September 1776, in Buffalo
township, Northumberland county, PA, Frederick enlisted to serve three months
in the militia. He enlisted with his
brother, Francis (Frantz) Kistler. In
1777, he again enlisted in Lancaster county, PA, as a substitute. He served two months. In 1778, he enlisted in Northumberland
county, PA, and served seven months.
In 1781, he enlisted at
Staunton, Augusta county, VA, for the duration.
He married Catherine Roller on
1/3/1787 in Rockingham county, VA.
About 1792, he moved to Wilkes county, GA. About 1813, he moved to Harrrison county, KY, where he joined
Francis Kistler. About 1817, he
migrated to Jefferson county, IN. In
1831, he moved to Clark county, IN, where he died 3/9/1836. His wife died 2/20/1837.
Known children are as follows:
Emanuel NGA
John NGB
Susannah NGC
Frederick NGD
Solomon NGE
Samuel NGF
Revolutionary War pension file
S16177 contains a petition from Susannah Giltner, Samuel Kestler and Emanuel
Kestler, heirs of Frederick and his widow Catherine. The petition is dated 4/10/1853.
Thus, it appears that Frederick's other children had died by this
date. Indeed, other sources show that
John died in 1839 and Solomon in 1833.
NGA Edmond Emanuel
Emanuel was born about 1793 in
Wilkes county, GA. About 1813, he moved
with his father to Harrison county, KY.
Then, about 1817, he moved with his father to Jefferson county, IN. He married Minta Jones on 12/23/1824 in
Indianna. LDS records show that Edmond
Kistler married Minta Jones in Jefferson county, IN, on 12/23/1824; another
source shows 12/23/1825. Pat Ostwald
shows the following children: Josiah,
Archie, Martha Ann, Emilette, and Charlotte.
NGAA Josiah
NGAB Archie
NGAC Martha Ann
Martha Ann was born about 1830
in Indiana and married Jeptha Stoner (born 1826) on 10/7/1847 in Clark county,
IN. She died sometime between 1867 and
1875 in Coles county, IL.
NGAD Emilette
Emilette (whose name was spelled
various ways) was born 8/9/1832 in Indiana.
On 6/11/1849 in Clark county, IN, she married Daniel Stoner (born
11/12/1829). She died 4/10/1899 on Port
Rock, Atchinson county, MO.
NGAE Charlotte
Charlotte married William Adams
in 1857 in Clark county, In.
NGB John (B06)
John was born about 1795 in
Wilkes county, GA. Apparently, he did
not move with his father to Kentucky in 1813.
He appears to have remained in Wilkes county where he married Elizabeth
Hudgens -- the date of marriage was probably 1/29/1816. Elizabeth showed this date when, some years
later, she filed a bounty land application.
Subsequently, when filing a pension claim, she showed a marriage date in
October 1814. Probably the 1816 date is
correct; John and Elizabeth's first child was born about 1817.
Sometime about 1819, John and
his wife moved to Indiana. John died
12/18/1839 in Clark county, IN.
In 1874, Elizabeth, his widow,
filed a pension claim based on her husband's service in the War of 1812. The
pension claim showed that her husband, John, had served in the Georgia militia
(Captain Kendrick's Company, Colonel McIntosh's Regiment, General Jackson's
Division). John served at Washington in
Wilkes county, GA, where he was drafted in March 1814 and was discharged in
September 1814. The pension claim also
asserted that John married Elizabeth Hudgens in October 1814. The pension was denied.
In 1874 when the pension claim
was filed, Elizabeth was age 77. Thus,
she had been born about 1797 and had been about 17 years old when she married.
The 1850 Census records for
Jefferson county, IN, show the widow, Elizabeth, age 50 (born GA); son, William
Kistler, age 28; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, age 27; daughter Elizabeth, age
15; and son Solomon, age 19. The Census
entry shows her son, William, as the head of the household.
Family
records provided by Mrs. Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that the children of
John and Elizabeth are as follows:
Matilda NGBA
Martha Jane NGBB
William NGBC
Solomon NGBD
Elizabeth NGBE
NGBA Matilda
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that Matilda was born about 1817 in Wilkes
county, GA.
Matilda married four times. She first married J. Eldridge on
11/16/1833. She next married J.
McClelland on 2/26/1842. She then
married J.W. Thompson on 8/11/1857. She
then married again, a fourth time, to E. George.
NGBB Martha Jane
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that Martha Jane was born about 1818 in Wilkes
county, GA. She married Joshua Taylor
on 11/7/1845; another source shows 11/7/1845.
She died in 1894 and is buried in Saluda, Jefferson county, IN.
NGBC William J.
LDS records show that William J.
Kistler married Elizabeth Hayes on 10/25/1848 in Jefferson county, IN; another
source shows 10/23/1848. The 1850
Census records for Jefferson county show William, age 28; and his wife
Elizabeth, age 27; as well as William's mother Elizabeth, age 50 (born GA);
sister Elizabeth, age 15; and brother Solomon, age 19.
The 1900 Census records for
Clark county, IN, show William, age 74 (born 6/1825); and Mary M., age 69 (born
9/1830). The Census records also show
that William's parents were born in Georgia and that he and his wife had been
married for 29 years (i.e., married in 1871).
From these Census data it is
evident that William was rather careless about his age and that he had married
twice.
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald confirm that William was born about 6/1825. He married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Hayes who died 1/12/1869. William married within the year to Mary M. Black. William died 8/13/1901.
NGBCA John T.
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that John T. was born about 1852.
NGBCB Samuel H.
Family records provided by Mrs. Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show
that Samuel H. was born about 1854. He
married Nancy Horner on 9/19/1880.
The 1900 Census records for
Guthrie county, Iowa, show Samuel, age 45 (born 3/1855); Nancy, age 42 (born
7/1857); Jesse, age 18 (born 6/1881); Oliver, age 17 (born 4/1883); Eddie,
age 14
(born 6/1885); Stella, age 13 (born 1/1887); Mandie, age 11 (born 9/1888); and
Ray, age 5 (born 5/1895).
NGBCC Worcester Jester
LDS records for Clark county,
IN, show that Worcester Jester Kistler was born 7/1856, the son of William and
Mary M. Kistler. This is, undoubtedly,
an error -- Worcester Jester would have been the son of William and his first
wife, Elizabeth. Refer to the entry
above for William (NGBC); note that William's first wife was Elizabeth Hayes --
the 1900 Census data shows that William apparently did not marry his second
wife, Mary, until 1871.
LDS records for Jefferson
county, IN, show that Worcester Jester married Mary Ann Black on
8/24/1881.
Apparently, Worcester Jester
moved to Illinois; LDS records for Bureau county, IL, show that Worcester Jester
Kistler and his wife had two children (born in 1882 and 1884). Later, he must have relocated back to
Indiana; LDS records for Jefferson county, IN, show that Worcester Jester
Kistler and his wife had three children (born in 1892, 1895, and 1899).
NGBCD Mary J.
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that Mary J. was born about 1859.
NGBCE Martha Elizabeth
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that Martha Elizabeth was born about 1861. She married Azor Charles on 7/3/1879 in
Clark county, IN. She died before her
father.

Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that Andrew Jackson was born about 1863. The 1900 Census records for Jefferson
county, IN, show Jackson, age 37 (born
9/1862), his wife of twelve years, Nettie, age 32 (born 3/1868), and son John,
age 10, (born 1/1890).
NCBCFA John
John, age 10 (born 1/1890) is
shown in the 1900 Census for Jefferson county, IN, in his father’s
household.
NGBCG Willian M.
Family records provided by Mrs. Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show
that William M. was born about 1865 and that he married Luvenia Brandon on
11/29/1881.
NGBCH Infant
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that that William and Mary were parent to an
unnamed infant daughter born 1/3/1867, died same day.
NGBD Solomon
The 1850 Census records for
Jefferson county, IN, show Solomon, age 19, in the household of his brother,
William (NGBC). Family records provided by Mrs. Patricia St.Clair
Ostwald show that Solomon married twice.
He first married Sarah Ann Rankins on 10/24/1850. Apparently they were divorced in the late
1860s or early 1870s. On 10/5/1875 he
married Eliza Gobin, a widow.
The 1860 Census records for
Andrew county, MO, show Solomon, age 30; Sarah, age 31; daughter M.P., age 8;
James R., age 7; Martha, age 5; William F., age 3; and mother Elizabeth, age 61
(born GA).
The 1870 Census records for
Andrew county, MO, show Sarah, age 38; Mary, age 18; James, age 17; Martha, age
15; Frank, age 11; Lizzie, age 9; and Charley, age 6. I cannot locate a Census record for Solomon himself in 1870.
The 1880 Census records for
Andrew county, MO, show Sarah, age 46, a "widow" in the household of
her son, James (NGBDB).
The 1880 Census records for
Livingston county, MO, also show an entry for Solomon Kistler, age 41 (sic);
wife Eliza Ann, age 32; step-daughter Unis Gobin, age 10; step-daughter Lodina
Gobin, age 7; Tony Kistler, age 4; and John Kistler, age one month. The Census records also show that Solomon's
parents were born in Georgia.
NGBDA Mary (M.P.)
Mary, age 8, appears in her
father's household in the 1860 Census records for Andrew county, MO. At age 18, she appears in her mother's
household in the 1870 Census records for Andrew county, MO. She married David H. Allison. She died 8/21/1904.
NGBDB James Risley
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that James Risley was born about 1853 and
married Amanda J. Faulkner in 1876. He
died in Colorado before 1900.
James, age 7, appears in his
father's household in the 1860 Census records for Andrew county, MO. At age 17, he appears in his mother's
household in the 1870 Census records for Andrew county. The 1880 Census records for Andrew county
show James, age 26; Amanda J., age 23; daughter Ollie (this is in error, should
be son Ulla), age eleven months; mother Elizabeth, age 46; and brother Charles,
age 14.
NGBDBA Ulla V.
Ulla, age eleven months, appears
in his father's household in the 1880 Census records for Andrew county, MO (he
is erroneously shown as “Olive”, a daughter).
He married Jane Tollman on 3/29/1899 in Weld county, CO.
The 1900Census records for Weld
county, CO, show Ulla V., age 21 (born 7/1878), wife Jane D. (born 5/1878), and
son Charles W. (born 1/1900).
NGBDBB Charles
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that Charles was born 12/8/1881 and died
6/30/1885.
NGBDBC Frederick
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that Frederick was born 11/23/1885. He married Molly Weidenkeller in 1907. He died 6/24/1938.
The 1900 Census records for Weld
county, CO, show Frederick, age 15 (born 11/1884), as a farm laborer in the
household of Dan Armstrong.
NGBDBD William Warren
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that William Warren was born 10/2/1892 and died
11/11/1951.
The 1900 Census records for Weld
county, CO, show William, age 8 (born 10/1891) (sic), as the step-son to Charles
Johnson and his wife, Amanda.
Undoubtedly, Amanda is the widow of James Kistler (NGBDB).
NGBDC Martha
Martha, age 5, appears in her
father's household in the 1860 Census records for Andrew county, MO. At age 15, she appears in her mother's
household in the 1870 Census records for Andrew county, MO.
NGBDD Frank (William Frank)
Frank, age 3, appears in his
father's household in the 1860 Census records for Andrew county, MO. At age 11, he appears in his mother's
household in the 1870 Census records for Andrew county.
NGBDE Elizabeth
Elizabeth, age 9, appears in her
mother's household in the 1870 Census records for Andrew county, MO.
NGBDF Charles
Family records show that Charles
was born 9/2/1864 or 1867 in Missouri and that he died 3/8/1927 in Boulder, CO.
Charles, age 6, appears in his
mother's household in the 1870 Census records for Andrew county, MO. At age 14, he appears in the household of
his brother James (NGBDB) in the 1880 Census records for Andrew county, MO.
The 1900 Census records for
Boulder county, CO, show Charles, age 35 (born 9/1864); Grace, age 27 (born
5/1873); and three children born after 1880.
The Census records also show that Charles was born in Missouri;
erroneously, the records show his parents were born in Pennsylvania (should be
Indiana).
NGBDG Tony
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that “Toney” married Milla Simmons on
4/11/1895.
Tony, age 4, appears in the 1880
Census records for Livingston county, MO, in his father's household. The 1900 Census records for Erath county,
TX, show Tony, age 23 (born 3/1877); his wife Milla age 22 (born 3/1878);
Annie, age 3 (born 6/1896); Alfred, age 1 (born 7/1898); and Tony’s
mother-in-law, Linda Simmons, age 40 (born 5/1860). The Census records show erroneously that Tony was born in Texas
(he was born in Missouri), and that his parents were born in Missouri (his
father was born in Indiana, his mother in Missouri).
NGBDGA Annie
Annie is shown on the 1900
Census in her father’s household.
NGBDGB Alfred
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that William Alfred was born 7/1/1898. He is shown on the 1900 Census in his

Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show that Doney was born ON 9/12/1886. He married Nina and subsequently lived in
Carter county, OK.
NGBE Elizabeth
Elizabeth, age 15, appears in
the 1850 Census records for Jefferson county, IN. LDS marriage records for Clark county, IN, show Elizabeth
"Kishler" married George Davis on 6/16/1854.
NGC Susannah
Susannah was born about 1796 in
Wilkes county, GA. About 1813 she moved
with her father to Harrison county, KY.
In Kentucky, she married Andrew Giltner in January 1817. About that time, too, she and her husband
moved with her father to Jefferson county, IN.
NGD Frederick
Family records provided by Mrs.
Patricia St.Clair Ostwald show Frederick (NGD) as a possible son of Frederick
(NG). It appears that he was born about
1800 in Georgia and married Sarah McCoy on 12/19/1822 in Missouri (per Pat
Ostwald; date taken from St. Charles County, MO, index to marriages and wills).
NGE Solomon
Solomon was born about 1803 in
Wilkes county, GA. About 1813, he moved
with his father to Harrison county, KY.
