BE John
As noted
elsewhere, at one time I mistook John (B) for the son of George (A). I compounded the error by mistaking John
(AL), for the son of John (B). I then
overlooked John Kistler -- the actual son of John (B) -- who had moved to North
Carolina with his brothers, George (BA) and Jacob (BC).
I have now
corrected these errors. The following
information may also prove useful.
1. Barbara's will names her sons: John
George, William, Jacob, Abraham, and John -- in that sequence. I suspect she named her sons in the order of
birth. Since it is known that Abraham
was baptized at the age of nine weeks by Rev Schumacher in February of 1762, it
can be deduced that Abraham was born in late December 1761. Thus, Barbara's son, John, must have been
born later -- sometime between late 1762 and the death of his father about
1772.
We
also know that Rev. Schumacher confirmed "John" in 1767. It is unlikely that he would have confirmed
a child of five or six or younger.
Thus, it is unlikely that the child he confirmed was the son of John (B)
and Anna Barbara -- rather, the child Schumacher confirmed must have been the
son of George (A) -- that is, John (AL), who was born about 1752.
2. EBEN baptismal records clearly show
the existence of John (AL), son of George (A) Kistler and his wife
Dorothea.
The EBEN
baptismal entry for John (ALE), son of John (AL), shows Dorothea (AH) as a
sponsor. The EBEN baptismal entry for
Eva (ALH), daughter of John (AL), shows George (A) and his wife Dorothea as
sponsors. And the EBEN baptismal entry
for Maria Magdalena (ALG), daughter of John (AL), shows Michael Moser and his
wife Maria Barbara (AG) as sponsors.
The rationale
for these sponsors can best and most simply be explained by accepting that John
(AL) is a son of George (A) and, thus, brother to Dorothea (AH) and Maria
Barbara (AG).
3.
More significantly, on August 10, 1784, John Kistler, "a
minor above the age of
fourteen years, one of the children of John Kistler, late of
Albany township in Berks county .." petitioned the Justices of the Orphans
Court held at Reading to permit him "to make of choice of some proper
person as guardian to take care of his person and estate according to
law". I am indebted to Bruce
Kistler for unearthing this petition.
Since the
petition is dated in 1784 and since John was a minor above the age of 14, he
must have been born between 1763 and 1770.
*****
John (BE) was
probably born about 1767. Together with
his older brothers George (BA) and Jacob (BC), he moved to North Carolina
sometime before 1790. In North
Carolina, John settled in Rowan county.
He seems to have married three times.
Rowan county marriage records show that on 3/24/1792, John Kistler
married Susanna Lopp. John's second
wife was Mary Barringer (m. 1798). His
third wife was Mary Barbara Hollar Lippard; Iredell County Heritage shows that
Mary Barbara, born 1771, widow of John Lippard who died in 1821, then married
John Kistler.
John died in 1841 at age 74 (this
indicates a birth date of 1767). John's
will, dated March 1841 and probated November 1841, names his wife as Mary
B. His children are named as follows:
Jacob BEA
Christina BEB
John BEC
Henry BED
Paul BEE
Mary BEF
Margaret/Peggy
BEG
BEA Jacob
Jacob was
born about 1797; he probably was the child of his father's first marriage. LDS records show that Jacob married Mary
Pool on 8/24/1818 in Rowan county, NC.
About 1825,
Jacob and his family moved to Illinois.
This can be deduced from the age and birthplace of his sons, John (BEAB)
and Jacob (BEAC), as shown in Census records.
Refer also to the entry below for Mary (BEF) -- in 1842, Jacob (BEA) of
Illinois is mentioned in a real estate transaction involving the estate of his
father in North Carolina.
The 1830
Census records show Jacob was then located in Johnson county, IL. The Jacob Kiestler family then consisted of
one male, age 30-40 (Jacob, BEA); one female , age 30-40 (his wife); one male,
10-15 (John, BEAB); two females, 5-10 (one of these must be Susannah Lucinda,
BEAA); one male under 5 (Jacob, BEAC); and two females under 5 (one of these
must be Adalilne, BEAD).
On 1/4/1838,
his daughter, Susannah Lucinda (BEAA), was married in Johnson county (refer to
her entry below).
The 1850
Census records for Johnson county, IL, show Jacob "Kesler", age
unknown; his son, Jacob Kesler, age 24; Adaline, age 22; Nancy, age 17; and
William, age 14. The birthplace of the
senior Jacob is shown as North Carolina; all others in the household were born
in Illinois.
BEAA Susannah
Lucinda
Susannah
Lucinda was probably born about 1820.
LDS records show that "Lucinda Keistler" married James K.P.
Smith in Johnson county, IL. The
publication, Johnson County, Illinois, Early Marriages, 1834-1877, (reference
code JCEM), shows "Susannah Lucinda Kestler" married James K.P. Smith
on 1/4/1838.
BEAB John
The 1850
Census records for Johnson county, IL, show John Kesler, age 27 (he probably
was age 30); Nancy, age 23; and William B., age 2. John's birthplace is shown as North Carolina; his wife and son
are shown as having been born in Illinois.
The 1860
Census records for Johnson county show John L., age 40 (born NC); Nancy, age
31, and William, age 11.
Evidently,
John's first wife died sometime after the 1860 Census, and he then remarried --
to another woman named Nancy. JCEM
records show John Kesler/Kestler married Nancy J. Watson on 8/2/1870. In support of this, the 1900 Census records
for Johnson county show Nancy Keistler, widow, (age not recorded); her son
Marion, age 25 (born 5/1875); and a daughter Margaret, age 19 (born
8/1880). Nancy is shown as being born
in Virginia. The Census entries for her
children show that their father had been born in North Carolina.
BEABA William
B.
William B.,
age 2, is shown in his father's household in the 1850 Census records for
Johnson county, IL. At age 11, William
is shown in his father's household in the 1860 Census records for Johnson
county.
JCEM records show that William B. Kesler
married Rachel A. Bryant on 3/16/1868.
BEABB Marion
The 1900
Census records for Johnson county, IL, show Marion, age 25 (born 5/1875), in
the household of his widowed mother.
BEABC Margaret
The 1900
Census records for Johnson county, IL, show Margaret, age 19 (born 8/1880) in
the household of her widowed mother.
BEAC Jacob
Jacob, age
24, is shown in his father's household in the 1850 Census records for Johnson
county, IL. His birthplace is shown as
Illinois.
LDS records
show that Jacob Kestler married Catherine Turner in Johnson county, IL, on
4/14/1854. LDS records also show Jacob
Keistler and Catherine nee Turner as parents of Mary C, born 4/12/1863 in Union
county, IL.
BEACA Mary C.
LDS records
show Jacob Keistler and Catherine nee Turner as parents of Mary C, born
4/12/1863 in Union county, IL. LDS
records also show that Mary C. Keisler married John W. Jones in Union county,
IL, on 11/10/1881.
BEAD Adaline
Adaline, age
22, is shown in her father's household in the 1850 Census records for Johnson
county, IL.
BEAE Nancy
Nancy, age
17, is shown in her father's household in the 1850 Census records for Johnson
county, IL.
BEAF William
W.
William, age
14, is shown in his father's household in the 1850 Census records for Johnson
county, IL. JCEM records show W.W.
Keistler married Mary Bryant on 2/16/1858.
The 1860
Census records for Johnson county show William, age 22; Mary E., age 20; and
Noah M., age 1. Apparently, Mary died
before 1876 (when William remarried).
The reference
book, Marriages of Union County, Illinois (1818-1880) shows that William W. Keisler,
age 37, married Elizabeth Meisenheimer (age 26) on May 30, 1876.
The 1900
Census records for Johnson county show William Keistler, age 62 (born 2/1838);
Elizabeth, age 51 (born 6/1848); and four children born after 1880. The Census notes that William and Elizabeth
had been married for 23 years.
BEAFA Noah
M.
Noah M., age
1, is shown in his father's household in the 1860 Census records for Johnson
county, IL. The 1900 Census records for
Johnson county show Noah Keistler, age 42 (born 2/1858); and wife Anna, age 53
(born 4/1847).
BEAFB Grover

household in the 1900 Census.
BEB Christina
Christina was
born about 1799. LDS records show that
Christina married Henry Albright on 4/24/1820 in Rowan county, NC. In 1841, her father's will refers to her as
Christina Albright.
BEC John
Cemetery
records show that John was born in 1804.
Rowan county marriage records in NC show that he married Christena
Sowers on 6/5/1820.
Christena
died about 1833. In the February 1837
Court Sessions of Rowan County, William Barr, the guardian of the heirs of
“Christian Kessler” filed his account.
This undoubtedly refers to the heirs of Christena (Sowers) Kistler –
there is no record of a Christian Kessler/Kistler. The heirs would have been her children, John (BECA) and James
(BECB), born about 1829 and 1831 respectively.
Note that in 1834 (probably shortly after the death of Christena), John
(BEC) married Sarah Scroggs.
Note, too,
that Elizabeth Sowers (sister to Christena) never married; she died in
1843. Her will was probated in
1844. The will mentions her brothers
George and Philip Sowers. The will also
mention (though not by name) the children of her sister Christiana Kestler.
In 1855, the
estate of Peter Sowers (brother to Christena) was divided among his heirs. Among the heirs were his nephews, John and
James Kistler. More than anything, this
confirms the marriage of Christena Sowers to John (BEC).
As already
noted, John married Sarah Scroggs in 1834.
The publication, Iredell County Heritage, describes John Kistler/Kestler
as a widower of considerable wealth who married Sarah Scoggs.
The
publication, Family and Church Cemetery Records in Iredell County, NC,
1753-1975, lists the Scroggs Cemetery.
Buried there are John Kestler, 11/9/1804-2/13/1878, and his wife, Sarah
(nee Scroggs), 12/11/1800-2/13/1891.
Also buried there are an infant son of John and Sarah who died in
February of 1840 and an infant daughter of John and Sarah who died in 1841.
