AL                           John

John's  birth date is uncertain; Kistler family papers at the Historical Society of Berks County (HSBC) mention a date of 1757.  Kistler family papers also at HSBC show that John was confirmed by Rev. Schumacher in 1767, indicating a birth date about 1750.  Elaine D. Schwar, writing in the Berks County Genealogical Society publication, (BCGS), shows John's birth about 1752.  John's death may be inferred from Lehigh county records which show his will (dated 1817) was probated on 06/12/1819.

John married Eva Maria Wiederstein, daughter of Johann Heinrich and Anna Maria Wiederstein.  Her birth on 4/8/1750 is recorded in the Wiederstein family Bible on file at the Lehigh County Historical Society in Pennsylvania.  BCGS shows the maiden name of John's wife as Eva Maria “Witterstein”.  Records of Rev. Helffrich refer to John and Eva (nee “Widerstein”) as the parents of Maria (ALA) and Conrad (ALB).

Kistler family papers at HSBC mention Eva “Widerstein” as the wife of John and indicate the Eva died in 1850 ‑‑‑ this is undoubtedly an incorrect death date since there is evidence that John had a second wife, Catherine, who received a settlement from John's estate after his death in 1819.

                John's children are as follows:

                                Maria Barbara                    ALA                        born 12/15/1777

                                Conrad                 ALB                        born 10/01/1786

                                John                                        ALE                        born 09/02/1776

                                Catherine             ALF                        born 01/11/1790

                                Maria Magdalena              ALG                       born 09/06/1787

                                Elizabeth                              ALI                         born about 1792

                                Susanna                ALJ                         born 02/12/1794

                                Salome                                  ALK                        born 03/13/1805

                                Unnamed son                      ALL                        born 04/07/1781

                                Unnamed daughter           ALM                       born 02/25/1785

For many years, I was mistaken about John (AL); I believed him to be the son of John (B).  In fact,  John (AL) is the son of George (A).  This is evident from EBEN baptismal records; from the will of Barbara Kistler, widow of John (B); and from a petition filed on behalf of John (BE):

                1.  EBEN baptismal records clearly show the existence of John (AL), son of George (A) Kistler and his wife Dorothera.  The EBEN baptismal record for John (ALE) shows Dorothea (AH) as a sponsor.  The EBEN baptismal record for Eva (ALH) shows George (A) and his wife Dorothea as sponsors.  And the EBEN baptismal record for Maria Magdalena (ALG) show Michael Moser and his wife Maria Barbara (AG) as sponsors.  The rationale for these sponsors can best and most simply be explained by accepting that John (AL) is a son of George (A) and, thus, brother to Dorothea (AH) and Maria Barbara (AG).

                2.  Yet another reason has to do with the will of Anna Barbara, widow of John (B).  John Kistler and his wife Barbara did have a son named "John", but not John (AL) -- refer instead to John (BE).

Barbara's will names her sons: John George, William, Jacob, Abraham, and John -- in that sequence.  I believe she named her sons in the order of birth.  Since it is known that Abraham was baptized at the age of nine weeks by Rev Schumacher in February of 1762, it can be deduced that Abraham was born in late December 1761.  Thus, Barbara's son John must have been born later -- sometime between late 1762 and the death of his father about 1772.

We also know that Rev. Schumacher confirmed "John" in 1767.  It is not likely he would have confirmed a child of five or six.  Thus, it is unlikely that the child he confirmed was the son of John (B) and Anna Barbara  -- rather, the child Schumacher confirmed must have been the son of George and Dorothea -- that is, John (AL), born about 1752.

3.       More significantly, on August 10, 1784, John Kistler, "a minor above the age of fourteen

years, one of the children of John Kistler, late of Albany township in Berks county .." petitioned the Justices of the Orphans Court held at Reading to permit him "to make of choice of some proper person as guardian to take care of his person and estate according to law".  (I am indebted to Bruce Kistler for unearthing this petition.)

Since the petition is dated in 1784 and since John was a minor above the age of 14, he must have been born between 1763 and 1770.  This fits exactly with John (BE), son of John (B) and Barbara – and does not fit with John (AL), son of George and Dorothea.

ALA                        Barbara (Maria Barbara)

The personal and pastoral records of Rev. John Henry Helffrich 1790-1810 and Rev.                 EBEN baptismal records show Wilson, born 4/8/1845, son of Jesaias and Karline nee Hausman Kistler.  PBRL and HLC also describe Wilson.

EBEN cemetery records show Wilson H., 4/8/1845-1/5/1913, and wife Sophia, 4/13/1848-5/3/1888.  EBRT shows these same dates and also the marriage of Wilson to Sophia Bloss on 5/30/1869.

Wilson appears in his father's household in the 1850 and 1860 Census records for Lehigh county, PA.  The 1870 Census records for Lehigh county show Wilson, age 25, and Sophia, age 22.

ALBDBD               Minerva

Minnie, age 2, appears in her father's household in the 1880 Census records for Lehigh county, PA.  The 1900 Census records for Erie county, NY, show Minerva, age 22 (born 01/1878), single.  The records indicate that she and her parents were born in Kentucky, but this is improbable.

ALBDC                  Lewis H.

Both PBRL and HLC mention Lewis, and he is shown in his father's household in the 1850 and 1860 Census records for Lehigh county, PA.  NEL describes his wife as Lucy Ann and mentions one child, Agnes Caroline, born 12/14/1873.

The 1880 Census records for Lehigh county show Lewis, age 32; Lucy, age 28; Agnes, age 6; Anna M., age 4; and Eugene M., age 2.

Joseph married twice.  On 5/22/1836 he married Elizabeth Payne.  Elizabeth apparently died about 1854.  Weber shows that Joseph then married Catherine Margaret Shawbury on 9/11/1855.   Latter Day Saint (LDS) records confirm this, showing that Joseph married Catherine "Schabesy".  In other records her last name is spelled various ways -- Shawberry or Shaberg.

The 1850 Census records for Seneca county, OH, show Joseph, age 35; Elizabeth, age 36; Josiah, age 12; Sarah, age 10; Amanda, age 8; Elizabeth, age 5; and Lafayette, age fourteen months.

Weber shows that Joseph and his wife (Catherine) had a daughter, Catharina, born about 1856; apparently she died young, before the 1860 Census.  Weber also shows that Joseph and his wife had another daughter also named Catharina, born about 1860, died about 1862.

Also, Weber shows that Joseph and his wife had a son, Levi, born about 1856, died 12/23/1865; I suspect that Levi was probably born in the early 1860s since he is absent from the 1860 Census records.

ALCD                    John T.

Kistler family papers at HSBC describe John, 8/18/1806 - 7/14/1876.  Information from Walter Rogers (113 Aster Court SW, Pataskala, OH) shows that on 7/25/1824 John Kistler married Eva Breisel/Brish.  Other sources show her name as Eva Breisch.  Eva was born 3/17/1805 in Schuylkill county, PA.

The History of Seneca county, Ohio, (HSO), describes John and several of his children and states that John settled in Seneca county in 1833.  HSO shows that John died 7/14/1870 at age 66 (suggesting a birth date of 1804) and that Eva died 1/8/1878 at age 72.  Weber shows that John was born 9/14/1805 and died 7/14/1870.

The 1850 Census records for Seneca county, OH, show John, age 46; Eve, age 46; Polly, age 21; Monroe, age 21; Monroe's wife, Catherine, age 20; Sarah, age 15; and John, age 5.  The 1860 Census records for Seneca county, OH, show John T., age 56, and Eve, age 56.

Weber shows that John and Eva had children as follows:  John August, Philip, and Solomon (born 1834).

With regard to John August, this is probably “John” as shown in the 1850 Census  records, born about 1845.

With regard to Philip, there are no alternatives to suggest except that he probably died young.

With regard to Solomon, there is a more involved explanation.  Perhaps John and Eva did have a child named Solomon.  If so, I believe their child died young.  The Solomon shown in Census records for Seneca county is, I believe, actually the nephew of John – refer to Solomon (ALDD).

In brief, John had a brother,(no, an uncle) Henry (ALD), and three of his sons did move to Seneca county – Henry (ALDA), John (ALDG) and Solomon (ALDD).  Solomon (ALDD) was born 10/6/1824  which is a perfect match for the Seneca county Census records which show Solomon.  It should be noted, however, that the 1850 Census shows that Solomon and John (ALDC) were immediate neighbors – suggesting a father/son relationship.  Solomon’s age, of course, is at odds with a birth date in 1834.

Note that Solomon, born 1825, is the father of (John) William, born 1858.  In turn, William in the father of Clarence, born 1878.

The 1850 Census records for Seneca county, OH, show Monroe, age 21; and Catherine, age 20, in his father's household.                The 1860 Census records for Seneca county, OH, show Monroe, age 30; Catherine, age 20 (should be 30); John, age 19 (should be 9); Henry, age 7; Lana, age 5; George, age 2; and Monroe, age one month.  The 1880 Census records for Seneca county show Monroe, age 49; Catherine, age 50; Monroe, age 19; Nathan, age 17; Frank, age 10; and Anna, age 5.
