AF Samuel
Samuel
was the youngest and most prolific son.
His children were also prolific; Samuel's family is the largest branch
of the Kistler family.
Gravestones
at JER show Samuel, 9/20/1754‑4/24/1822, and his (second) wife, Catherine
nee Brobst, 12/16/1767‑3/26/1845. The DAR Patriot's Index also show
Samuel's first marriage to Maria Elizabeth Ladich; papers at HSBC show that
Maria Ladich was born 11/22/1761. Based
on baptismal entries for Samuel's children, his first wife must have died 1779‑1788.
Samuel's
children are as follows:
Maria Barbara AFA
Jacob S. AFB
Samuel

Daniel AFD
John S. AFE

AFA Barbara
(Maria Barbara)
JER records show Maria Barbara,
born 8/26/1779, daughter of Samuel and Maria Elizabeth, godparents Michael and
Maria Barbara Kistler (AD). LCC shows
that Barbara married Henry Sunday/Sontag and is buried at Dunkel's Church near
Klinesville. Death records from the
Reading (PA) Adler at the HSBC show Maria Barbara Sontag nee Kistler, wife of
Henry, died 6/11/1850, age 70/2/23.
AFB Jacob S.
Baptismal
records have not been located, but gravestones at JER show Jacob S., 10/5/1781‑10/7/1849,
and (third) wife Anna Barbara Bausch, 6/25/1790‑11/19/1867. The LCC indicates that Jacob married three
times: first to a daughter of William Carl (baptismal records give her name as
Catherine); then to Catherine Bausch (with whom he had no children); and then
to Anna Barbara Bausch. HELF shows the
marriage of Jacob and Catherine on 4/14/1807 and the marriage of Jacob and
Barbara on 5/14/1809. From these dates
and from baptismal records, we can conclude that Jacob's first wife died about
1806 and his second wife died about 1808.

show David, age 32, in his father's household.
In both cases, David's recorded age makes little sense -- he would have
been 34 in 1850 and 44 in 1860.

his father died).
AFCG Lydia
Neither birth nor death records
have been located. Lydia is named in
her father's will as the wife as Michael Moser.
AFCH Catherine
Neither birth nor death records
have been located. Catherine is named
in her father's will as the wife of Conrad Ebert.
AFCI Samuel
Birth records have not been
located, but Samuel is named in his father's will. He was probably born about 1812.
The 1850 Census records for Lehigh county, PA, show Samuel, age 38;
Sarah, age 25; Anna, age 6; Julina (Angelina), age 4; Joseph, age 2, and
William, age one month.
Samuel moved from Lehigh county
to adjoining Schuylkill county sometime
after 1850. Schuylkill county (PA)
probate records dated in 1857 show that Samuel died in 6/1857, leaving a widow,
Sarah, and five children. Later, his
family may have returned to Lehigh county -- in 1864 the Lehigh county orphan
court records show a petition by the children of Samuel (deceased). This petition names Samuel's widow, Sally,
and children: Edwin Lewis and Caroline (both under 14); Joseph and Angelina
(both over 14); and William (whose age was not categorized). Apparently, Anna, the oldest child, had died
young (before 1857) since the Schuylkill county probate records refer to
Samuel's five children, and these are all named in the Lehigh county
petition.
The death certificate of son
William shows his mother's maiden name as Hartung. It is interesting to note that Samuel's property in Schuylkill
county adjoined the property of Michael Hartung -- probably his brother-in-law.
I have not located Samuel's
family in the 1860 Census records, but the 1870 Census records for Schuylkill
county, PA, show Sarah, widow, age 35 (sic); Joseph, age 21; William, age 19;
Edwin, age 17; Angelina, age 15 (sic); and Caroline, age 13 (sic). The 1880 Census records for Carbon county,
PA, show Sarah, age 56, in the household of her son, Joseph.
AFCIA Anna
Anna, age 6, appears in her
father's household in the 1850 Census records for Lehigh county, PA. Apparently, Anna died young, before
1857. Refer to the above entry for her
father, Samuel (AFCI).
AFCIB Angelina
Angelina, age 4, appears in her
father's household in the 1850 Census records for Lehigh county, PA. Lehigh county orphan count records in 1864
identify Angelina (over 14) as a daughter of Samuel. The 1870 Census records for Schuylkill county, PA, show Angelina,
age 15 (sic) in the household of her widowed mother.

appears in her father's household in the 1900 Census records for Luzerne
county, PA.
AFCICC Ross
Ross, age 2, appears in his father's
household in the 1880 Census records for Carbon county, PA. At age 22, he appears in his father's
household in the 1900 Census records for Luzerne county, PA.
AFCID William Franklin
William, age one month, appears
in his father's household in the 1850 Census records for Lehigh county,
PA. In 1864, Lehigh county orphan court
records identify William as a son of Samuel (AFCI). The 1870 Census records for Schuylkill county, PA, show William,
age 19, in the household of his widowed mother.
EBEN gravestones show William
Franklin, born 6/1/1850, died 10/3/1916; and wife Jane D. Snyder, born
1/20/1857, died 6/18/1900.
The death certificate for
William shows his parents as Samuel Kistler and Sarah nee Hartung.

plot show Frank S., born 7/2/1877, died 8/17/1949. Information from Larry Menta (4112 Cedar Drive, Walnutport, PA,
18088) shows that Frank married Mary Ellen Spahn. She was born 7/20/1882
and died 4/13/1959.

AFCJF Caroline
Caroline, age 18, appears in the
1870 Census records for Slatington, Lehigh county, PA, in the household of
Daniel (AFCJB). Although there is no
proof, Caroline is probable a sister to Daniel.
AFCJG Charles
The HLC describes Charles who
was born 2/5/1857 at Weissport, Carbon county, PA, the son of Daniel and
Catherine nee Everett. The HLC reports
that Charles lived in Schuylkill county until 1883, then moved to Slatington,
Lehigh county, PA, and later still to Allentown, Lehigh county. The HLC further shows that Charles married
Catherine Ann Miller on 6/4/1877; they had seven children, including Ella
Amanda and Lillian Irene.
The 1870 Census records for
Schuylkill county, PA, show Charles, age 13, in the household of Samuel Correll
and his wife. The 1900 Census records
for Allentown, Lehigh county, show Charles, age 43 (born 2/1857); Kate, age 50
(born 3/1850); married daughter Ella Ritter, age 21 (born 11/1878); daughter
Lillian, age 20 (born 3/1880); and several other children born after 1880.
AFCJGA Ella Amanda
The HLC describes Ella Amanda as
a daughter of Charles and Catherine.
Records of the High German Reformed and Evangelical Lutheran Church,
West Penn township, Schuylkill county, PA, show Ella Amanda, born
11/30/1878.
The HLC also shows Ella married
Martin M. Ritter. The 1900 Census
records for Allentown, Lehigh county, PA, show Ella Ritter, age 21 (born
11/1878) in her father's household.
AFCJGB Lillian Irene
The HLC describes Lillian Irene
as a daughter of Charles and Catherine.
The HLC also show that Lillian married Irvin Snyder.
The 1900 Census records for
Allentown, Lehigh county, PA, show Lillian, age 20 (born 3/1880) in her
father's household.
AFCK Stephen S.
Stephen is named in his father's
will. FEG shows Stephen, son of Samuel
and Catherine, born 3/31/1824, died 5/21/1886.
EBEN cemetery records also show Stephen S., born 3/31/1824, died 5/21/1886.
Both FEG and NEL show that
Stephen married Alice J. Diehl in 10/6/1861. Alice appears to be Stephen's second wife. In 1846, EBEN baptismal records show that
Stephen and Matilda sponsored a child (AFCCE) of Stephen's brother John (AFCC).
The Census records for Stephen
are confusing since his age appears to be consistently incorrect. The 1850 Census records for Lehigh county,
PA, show Stephen, age 21, in his father's household. The 1860 Census records for Lehigh county show Stephen, age 30,
in a household adjoining his father.
The 1870 Census records for Lehigh county show Stephen, age 40; and
Alice, age 27. Finally, the 1880 Census
records for Lehigh county show Stephen, age 48; and Alice, age 40.
AFCKA Jonas
EBEN baptismal records show
Jonas, son of Stephen and Alice, born 5/2/1863, godparent Mrs. Daniel Moyer
(Eliza nee Kistler -- AAAEAD). Jonas
probably died young since FEG, in reporting his father's death in 1886, notes
that Stephen and Alice had no children.
AFCL Elmira
Elmira is named in her father's
will as Elmira Druckenmiller.
AFD Daniel S.
Gravestones at Immanuel Church
(IMM), Mantz, Schuylkill county, PA, show Daniel S., born 2/21/1800, died
6/28/1866; and Magdalena nee Moser,
born 7/11/1804, died 4/1/1861.
Both the HLC and SCP contain
detailed narratives of Daniel and his descendants. In particular, SCP describes Daniel, born 2/21/1800, died
6/28/1866; his wife, Magdalena, born 7/12/1804 (sic), died 4/1/1861. These are essentially the same dates as
shown on the gravestones at IMM. In
conflict with these dates, however, JER records show Daniel, born 5/27/1789,
son of Samuel and Catherine, godparents Matthew and Elizabeth Brobst.
Although it may seem improbable,
it appears that the infant (Daniel) born in 1789 died -- and another child, born in 1800, was given the same name. The 1790, 1800 and 1810 Census records for
Daniel's father, Samuel (AF), seem to support Daniel's birth in 1800 rather
than 1789.
Daniel's birth date of 1800 is
certainly consistent with the age of Daniel as shown in later Census
records. The 1850 Census records for Schuylkill
county, PA, show Daniel, age 50; Magdalena, age 45; David, age 18; Esther, age
14; Fianna, age 12; and Catherine, age 7.
The 1860 Census records for Schuylkill county show Daniel, age 60; Mary,
age 56; Fianna, age 20; and Catherine, age 16.
As already noted, both the HLC
and SCP contain detailed narratives of Daniel and his descendants. His children are shown as: Charles (married Elizabeth Peters); Daniel
(married Catherine Whetstone); John M. (married Mary Moser); David (married
Mary Mantz); Noah (married Sarah Moser); Hetty (married David Zehner); Fianna
(married Rev. Daniel Yingst); and Catherine (married Rev B.F. Bohner).
AFDA Charles M.
The HLC shows Charles, son of
Daniel and Magdalena, born 7/4/1824, died 5/6/1888; and his wife, Elizabeth

The 1850 Census records for Schuylkill county, PA, show Charles, age 25;
Elizabeth, age 26; and James, age four months.

Elizabeth, age 30; Charles, age 10 (should be 8); James, age 8 (should be 10);

son of Charles, born 10/6/1851, died 2/21/1868. The 1860 Census records for Schuylkill county, PA, show Charles,

L.M. Mertz.

Landa (Leanna), age 15; Mahlon, age 9; Lewis, age 6; Alfred, age 3; and James,

All this data suggest that
Salome was actually born about 1821, was married before 1845, was widowed before
