AD Michael
Birth
records have not been located, but various sources indicate that Michael was
born about 1750. Kistler family papers
on file at HSBC show that Rev. Schumacher confirmed Michael Kistler (and
Frederick Kistler) in 1765; this suggests a birth date about 1750. Other sources (Our German, Pilgrim and
Quaker Ancestors by Mary Bell Lontz) show Michael's confirmation in 1764, and
suggest a birth date in 1748. Still
other sources (genealogical papers prepared by Mabel Van Dyke Baer, filed at
DAR) show a birth date of 1749. The
exact date may never be known, but we may conclude that Michael was born about
1750.
It
is known that by 1769 Michael was married; an extract of baptismal records of
the Ebenezer Church, New Tripoli, Lehigh county, PA, shows that in 1769 Michael
and Eva (nee Driesy) sponsored a child of George (AC).
Michael
married three times. His first wife,
Eva Driesy, is indicated by the baptismal record at Ebenezer Church. Eva probably died about 1770.
Genealogical
papers prepared by Mabel Van Dyke Baer and filed with the DAR show that Michael
married Barbara Haahl about 1772.
Michael and Barbara Kistler are shown on the records of the Lowhill
Union Church, Lehigh county, PA, as the parents of Philip Jacob, born 7/2/1774,
godparents Philip and Barbara Probst (AG).
Barbara
probably died about 1780. This is
evidenced, indirectly, by Rev. Helffrich's records. He records the death of Magdalena Schwab on 6/20/1833. He notes that Magdelana was born 10/17/1761,
the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Mans, that she married Melchoir Schwab on
5/3/1795, and that she had earlier been married for eleven years to Michael
Kistler with whom she had six children.
Since Michael died in 1792 (see below), it can be determined that
Michael and Magdalena were married about 1781, suggesting the death of
Michael's second wife about 1780.
Michael's
will is recorded in Northampton county (Lehigh county had not yet been
formed). Michael's will is dated
5/5/1792 and was probated 8/13/1792.
The will names three sons, Philip, Samuel, and Michael.
Unfortunately,
there is a good deal of confusion about the number and names of Michael's
children. Genealogical papers prepared
by Mabel Van Dyke Baer (cited earlier) show Michael's children as: Michael,
Samuel, John, Joseph, Nathan, Monroe, Salome, and Judith. This is incorrect, and the erroneous
information has been repeated elsewhere as well. Joseph, Monroe, and Judith are not children of Michael (AD); they
are children of Michael and Maria Magdalena (ALC). Some of the other children attributed to Michael (i.e., Nathan
and Salome) may also be in error. As
near as I can determine, Michael's children are as follows:
Philip ADA
Samuel ADB
Michael ADC
Jacob ADD
George ADE
Unknown ADF
Catherine ADG
Unknown ADH
John ADI
Michael's first three children ‑‑‑
Philip, Samuel and Michael ‑‑‑ were born to Michael and his
second wife Barbara. This is evidenced
by a petition in Berks county Orphan court, September 1788, for Philip (above
14) and for Samuel and Michael (under 14) for shares in the estate of their
grandfather, George Haahl. Michael's
other six children were born to him and his third wife, Magdalena, as evidenced
by Rev. Helffrich's notes. Of these six
children, I have been able to identify only four: Jacob, George, Catherine, and John.
ADA Philip
Records
of the Lowhill Union Church, Lehigh county, PA, show Philip Jacob, son of
Michael and Barbara Kistler, born 7/2/1774, godparents Philip and Barbara
Probst. By 1795, Philip had married
Anna Maria; in that year records of the Jerusalem Church (JER), Berks county,
PA, show that Philip and Maria were godparents to a child of Samuel (ADB).
Sometime
after 1800 Philip (and his brothers Samuel and Michael) moved to Westmoreland
county, PA. There, Philip's wife died;
a tombstone inscription in Mt. Pleasant township, Westmoreland county, shows
Mary, consort of Philip Kistler, died 4/10/1810, in her 35th year.
Philip
seems to have remarried. Baptismal
records of St. John's Church, Franklin township, Westmoreland county, PA, show
Philip Kistler and Margaretta as parents of Sarah, born 5/31/1818.
Philip
death is recorded in Marriages and Deaths, 1818‑1865, Westmoreland
County, PA, (MDW). He died at the age
of 60/9/3 at the home of his son Daniel; this would put his death on
4/5/1835. Another source, HYND, shows
his death as 4/10/1835.
ADAA Daniel

The private and unpublished
records of Janet and Henry Hyndman of Wichita, KS (HYND) show that Daniel died
12/26/1870. This same sourse shows his
wife was born in 1798, died in 1880.
The 1860 Census records for

34; and Anna M., age 12, but their relationship is not shown.
The 1870 Census records for
Westmoreland county show Daniel, age 76; and Mary, age 72. The 1870 records also show Anna M., age 23;

Probst in 7/1843. HYND shows her name
as Sarah Ann Brobst and her birth in 1824.

a Captain in the Union army, died of wounds received at Antietam. Daniel's will, proved in 1862, names his
wife and two children, Susanna and Morris.

of 1805, at the Greensburg Lutheran Church, Philip and Anna Maria Kustler

Zimmerman. Undoubtedly, the Zimmermans
were the sponsors of John in 1804.

Deed book records in 1839 in
Westmoreland county, PA, show a Declaration of Trust, from John Kistler to
Lydia Kistler, his wife. In brief,
Jacob Brinker, Lydia’s father, had furnished John Kistler with $1,500 to
purchase 240 acres of property in Franklin township from the estate of Samuel
Kistler with the declared intent that title to 107+ of those acres should be
vested with Lydia during her lifetime and to her heirs after her death. Obviously, John had married Lydia Brinker

of his children, if any.

Kistler, born 7/22/1806, died 4/15/1865.
ADBL Christina
Refer
to Samuel (ADBC). At ages 55, 66, and
77, Christina appears in her brother's household in the 1860, 1870 and 1880
Census records for Westmoreland county, PA.
Her name is shown variously as Christiana, Catherine, and
Christena. The 1880 Census records
definitely identify her as Samuel's sister.
Based on her age at the time of
the 1880 Census as well as the birth of her half‑sister, Catharina (ADBE)
on 1/4/1804, it seems probable that Christina was born in 1802 or early
1803. Her death on 5/1884 is recorded
in burial records of SJCW.
HYND shows that Christina was
born in 1803 and married Peter Klingersmith.
ADC Michael
JER
records show Michael, born 1/30/1779, son of Michael and "Maria",
godparents Samuel and Maria Kistler (AF).
LDS records show the parents as Michael and Barbara, godparents as
Samuel and Maria Elizabeth Kistler, and baptism on Easter.
Genealogical
papers prepared by Mabel Van Dyke Baer, filed at DAR, show Michael, born
1/30/1799, died 6/13/1848 (sic), married Mary Susanna Greenwald. DAR application papers #426234 show that
Susanna died in 1819 and that Michael later married Elizabeth Silvia/Silvis
(HYND shows Silvis). Michael is buried in St. James Cemetery, Bell township,
Westmoreland county.
German Church Records of
Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, 1792-1804, page 217, Volume 2, (Paul Miller
Ruff, compiler), shows that Elisabeth Silvis was born 4/13/1795, daughter of
John and Anna Maria (Yeagger) Silvis.
More detailed information
concerning Michael is provided in Orphan Court records dated in November of
1845 in Westmoreland county, PA. These
records show a petition of Jonathan Kistler, son of Michael Kistler, "late
of Washington township, Westmoreland county". This petition indicates Michael died in 1845 (not 1848 as
recorded elsewhere).
The Orphan Court records show
the heirs of Michael. Named are the
widow Elizabeth as well as son Daniel of Armstrong county; daughter Rebecca
married to Simon Hoover of Indiana county; seven grandchildren (children of son
Michael, deceased) Sarah, Samuel, Henry, Elizabeth, John, James, and Joseph,
all minors; son Samuel of Armstrong county; daughter Elizabeth married to David
Hilty; son Jonathan (petitioner); son David; son William; son George; daughter
Mary married to George Snyder; daughter Sarah; daughter Susanna; son Jackson;
daughter Margaret Ann; and daughter Lydia. The last five children named were
all minors at the time (1845). The
Court appointed David Kistler as guardian for all of the minor children and
grandchildren involved in the estate.
Several things seem apparent
from this petition. First, note that
Michael's children seem to be named in their order of birth; this helps to
validate birthdates. Next, since John
(ADCM) is not named, we may conclude that he died in childhood.
As near as can be determined,
Michael had six children with his first wife and ten children with his second
wife. His children are as follows:
Daniel ADCA born 1800
Rebecca ADCO born
ca 1802
Michael ADCC born 1806
Samuel ADCB born 1802
Elizabeth ADCD
born 1813
Jonathan ADCE

David ADCG born 1820
William ADCF born

1860 Census records for Franklin township, Westmoreland county, show Elizabeth,
age 63; and Lydia, age 20.
Westmoreland county Will Book 5
records Elizabeth's will which is dated 3/25/1867 and which was proved
3/4/1868. This document names her
children as follows: William, David, Mary Snyder, Sarah Squib, Susan Stull,
Jackson, Margaret McLaughlin, and Lydia Kistler – note that neither
John nor
George are named. Of course, John
apparently died before 1845 (he was not named in the petition of that
date). George apparently died before
1867 when his mother died.
ADCA Daniel
HYND shows Daniel as a son of
Michael (ADC), and Daniel is named in the 1845 petition concerning his father’s
estate (refer to the narrative for ADC).
The 1840 Census records for
Armstrong county show "Daniel Keisler", age 30-40, and members of his
household; this entry indicates that Daniel was born 1800-1810. Subsequent Census records indicate that
Daniel was born in 1796 (1850 Census) or 1801 (1860 Census). The 1880 Census records for son Samuel
(ADCAB) show that his father, Daniel (ADCA), was born in Northampton county, PA
-- that is, Daniel was born before the family moved to Westmoreland county,
PA. All this supports a birth date
about 1800.
Regardless of his birth date,
records of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Leechburg, PA, (FELC) show
that Daniel married Elizabeth Arner on 6/30/1825.
HYND shows that Daniel was born
11/19/1800 and died 8/6/1878. Also,
that his wife, Elizabeth, was born 10/5/1806 and died 10/7/1878.

in the 1860 Census records for Armstrong county.
HYND shows Amanda Elisha,
1844-1921; married Robert W. McKallip, 1844-1907. I suspect this is Elizabeth Amanda (ADCAF).
ADCB Samuel
HYND shows Samuel as a son of
Michael (ADC), and Samuel is named in the 1845 petition concerning his father’s
estate (refer to the narrative for ADC).
The 1840 Census records for
Armstrong county show "Samuel Keisler", age 30-40, and members of his
household; this entry indicates that Samuel was born 1800-1810. I suspect that Samuel was born about 1808.
There are indications that
Samuel married twice -- first to Elizabeth Stull, and then to Catherine
Stull. The evidence for this is based
on FELC records which show Samuel and Elizabeth as parents of a child, Catharina,
born in 1834; it seems likely that Elizabeth would have been about 18 years of
age (that is, born about 1816). But all
later baptismal records, beginning in 1838, refer to Samuel and Catharina --
and Census records indicate that Catharina was born either in 1820 or 1823
(1820 seems likely). Samuel appears to
have died about 1849. He is absent from
the 1850 Census, and his youngest son was only a year old at that time. Note also that FKLC records show that in
August 1856, a Catharine Kistler (no husband listed) gave birth to a child,
Sophronia, who died the same day.
The
1850 Census records for Armstrong county, PA, show John Stull, age 59;
Elizabeth Stull, age 60; other members of the Stull family; Catharina
"Kiesler", age 27; Hetty, age 5; Melinda, age 3; and Samuel, age
1. Apparently, Catharina was widowed
prior to 1850 and had returned to her parents.
The 1860 Census records for
Armstrong county show Catherine Kistler, age 40; Hetty, age 17; Mary M., age
15, and David Taylor, age 5 (no relationship given). However, see the entry below for Mary (ADCBE). Apparently, after Samuel died, his widow,
Catherine, married a Mr. Taylor; David was born to that union.
ADCBA Catharina

ADCF William
(Wilhelm)
SJCW
records show that twins, William and David, were born on 8/14/1820 to Michael
and Elizabeth "Muestler" (this is a typing error; the SJCW index
actually refers to "Kuestler"); godparents are shown as Rudolph and
Susanna "Kuestler". Note: In
Washington township, Westmoreland county, PA, there is a "Keister"
family which includes a Rudolph Keister -- I can find no other explanation for
this entry. To the best of my knowledge, there is no Rudolph Kistler/Kuestler.
MDW
shows that William Kistler married Sarah Masters in 4/1841. However, refer also to the entry below for
daughter Catherine (ADCFE); her birth records refer to her as the daughter of
William Kistler and Sarah McCutchen.
This suggests that Sarah McCutchen first married Mr. Masters and then,
when widowed, married William Kistler.
This sequence of events also accounts for Anna (ADCFA) whose age
indicates she was a step-daughter born in 1838.
The 1850 Census records for
Allegheny township, Westmoreland county, PA, show William, age 32; Sara, age
35; Anna, age 12; Abigail, age 8; George, age 6; John, age 4; Catherine, age 2;
and Sarah, age 2.
The 1860 Census records for
George township, Fayette county, PA, show William, age 41; Sarah, age 45;
Elizabeth, age 18; George, age 16; John, age 14; Catherine, age 10; Sarah, age
10; Joseph, age 9; William, age 7, and Andrew J., age 5.
Karen Steere, a descendant of

William, and his wife, Elizabeth McCreary (sic) Masters.
ADCFA Anna
Anna,

LDS records show Catherine
Kistler, born 11/2/1847, daughter of William Kistler and Sarah McCutchen (not
Sarah Masters). Coupled with MDW
records which show that William Kistler married Sarah Masters in 4/1841, this
suggests that Sarah McCutchen first married Mr. Masters and then, when widowed,
married William Kistler.
ADCFF Sarah
Sarah, age 2 (twin to Catherine)
appears in the 1850 Census records for Westmoreland county, PA, in her father's

records show that twins, William and David, were born on 8/14/1820 to Michael
and Elizabeth "Muestler" (this is a typing error; the SJCW index
actually refers to "Kuestler"); godparents Adam and Margaretta Silfys
(godparents undoubtedly were related to Elizabeth whose maiden name was
Silvia/Silvis).
The
1850 Census records for Franklin township, Westmoreland county, PA, show David,
age 30; Margaret, age 28; Elvera, age 1.
An unidentified source shows that David’s first wife was named Margaret
Jane Ritchie.
The 1880 Census records for
Hamilton county, IN, show David, age 59; Sarah, age 46; Ettie, age 13; and
Nora, age 10. David's first wife,
Margaret, had died; he married Sarah in 1856 (the 1900 Census records show he
and Sarah had been married for 44 years).
The 1900 Census records for
Hamilton county, IN, show David, age 79 (born 8/1820); and Sarah, age 66 (born
9/1833).
HYND shows that David married
Mary Richie; MDW records also show that David Kistler of Washington township
married Mary Richey of Murryville on 2/1843.
I cannot explain this except to speculate that David may have first
married Mary who died shortly thereafter -- and then he married Margaret.
ADCGA Elvera
The
1850 Census records for Westmoreland county, PA, show Elvera, age 1, in her
father's household. An unidentified
source shows that “Elvira” was born 12/19/1848 in Murraysville, Westmoreland
county, PA. She married John Calvin Whisler
on 11/19/870. She died 10/13/1930.

ADCI Sarah
SJCW
records show Sarah, born 6/23/1825, daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Kistler,
godparents Daniel and Rebecca Zimmerman.
Sarah
is named in her mother's will (dated in 1867) as Sarah Squib. HYND shows the same information.

ADCK Jackson (Andrew Jackson)
Jackson is named in his mother's
will (dated in 1867). HYND shows Andrew
Jackson, born 12/16/1828, married Margaretta Magdalena Kistler.
The 1850 Census records for
Franklin township, Westmoreland county, PA, show "Jackson Kistter",
age 32; the age shown is in error -- Jackson was about 22.
MDW shows Andrew J. Kistler of
Allegheny county married Margaret M. Kistler (ADBCH), daughter of Samuel
Kistler of Franklin township, Westmoreland county, on 1/13/1852. The 1860 Census records for Fawn township,
Allegheny county, show Jackson, age 30; Margaret, age 25; Catherine, age 8;
Susanna, age 4; and John H., age 2.
The 1870 Census records for
Armstrong county, PA, show A.J. Kistler, age 42; Margaret M., age 36; Katie,

adopted son.
The 1900 Census records for
Bureau county, IL, show Harry P., age 29 (born 11/1870); and Jennie, age 18
(born 3/1882). The Census records
indicate that Harry and both parents were born in Pennsylvania.
ADCKH William
Willie, age 8, appears in his
father's household in the 1870 Census records for Armstrong county, PA.
ADCL Margaret
Margaret is named in her mother's
will (dated in 1867) as Margaret McLaughlin.
The 1850 Census records for Westmoreland county, PA, show Margaret, age
19, in her widowed mother's household.
ADCM John
LDS records show John, son of Michael and
Elizabeth, baptized 11/20/1835 at First Lutheran Church, Greensburg,
Westmoreland county, PA. Church records
show his birth on 11/1/1835. I have
found no further record, and HYND provides no further information.
Note that his mother's will
dated in 1867 does not name John. He
probably died in his youth. Note also
that he does not appear with his widowed mother in the 1850 Census.
ADCN Lydia
Louisa
SJCW records show Lydia Louisa, born
1/27/1840, daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Kistler. The 1850 Census records for Washington township, Westmoreland
county, PA, show Lydia, age 10, in her mother's household. The 1860 Census records for Franklin
township, Westmoreland county, show Lydia, age 20, in her mother's household. The 1870 Census records for Westmoreland county
show Lydia, age 30, living alone.
Lydia Kistler is named in her
mother's will (dated in 1867).
ADCO Rebecca
Rebecca is named in the 1845
petition concerning her father’s estate (refer to the narrative for Michael,
ADC). The petition refers to her as the
wife of Simon Hoover (Huber or Uber) or Indiana county, PA. Based on the order in which Michael’s
children are named, Rebecca appears to have been born about 1802.
ADCP George
George is named in the 1845
petition concerning his father’s estate (refer to the narrative for Michael,
ADC). Based on the order in which
Michael’s children are named, George appears to have been born about 1822.
SJCW records show the birth on
7/4/1823 of Washington, son of Michael Kuester and Salome; godparents are shown
as Samuel (ADB) Kuester and Elizabeth.
This baptismal entry contains a number of errors. Obviously, the family name was
misspelled. Also, Michael's wife was
named Elizabeth, not Salome.
It is conjecture, but I believe
the child's full name was "George Washington". This seems a very appropriate name for a
child born on the Fourth of July -- a child whose brother born in 1828 was
named Andrew Jackson.
Note that "Washington"
does not appear in the Orphan Court records for Michael's estate. Note, too, that George was not named in his
mother’s will (refer to the narrative for Michael, ADC); George apparently died
before 1867.
ADD Jacob
Records
for Ebenezer Church (EBEN), New Tripoli, Lehigh county, PA, show Jacob, born
9/2/1782, died 6/15/1843, and wife Magdalena Mosser, born 9/16/1780, died
4/2/1855. Genealogical Findings in the
Allemangel Area of Berks and Lehigh Counties (NEL), compiled by Warren J.
Ziegler, also show this same data.
There is no direct link of Jacob to Michael
and Magdalena (AD). However, an extract
of baptismal records for EBEN shows that Jacob and his wife Magdalena were
godparents to a Kerschner child (see ADG) about 1813. Also, Jacob and Magdalena were godparents to a child of John and
Margaretha Kistler (see ADI) in 1817.
I believe that Jacob is a child
of Michael and Magdalena (AD) and that he and his wife served as godparents to
children of his sisters and brothers.
There is no record of children
born to Jacob and his wife.
ADE George
JER
records show George, born 8/6/1784, son of Michael and Magdalena Kistler,
godparents Philip and Elizabeth Barbara Kistler (AC).
In November of 1804, the
Register for the Probate of Wills in Northampton county, PA, issued documents
which show that George Kistler, a sadler of Heidelberg township, died without a
will. Jacob Kistler (identified as the
brother to George), Henry Ohl, and Abraham Reedy were appointed as
administrators of the estate. Although
positive proof is lacking, it appears that George (ADE) died in late 1804. Jacob (ADD) was an administrator of the
estate.
ADF Unknown
Rev.
Helffrich notes that Madgalena had six children with Michael. A study of birth dates of known children
suggests that this unknown child was born about 1786.
ADG Catherine
EBEN
cemetery records show Catherine Kerschner (nee Kistler), born 2/11/1788, died
5/27/1840, and Philip Kerschner, born 2/18/1783, died 12/25/1855. HELF records their marriage on 10/3/1810.
There
is no direct link of Catherine to Michael and Magdalena. However, EBEN baptismal records show that in
1825 Philip and Catherine Kerschner were godparents to a child (ADID)
of John
and Margareth (ADI). Earlier, about
1813, Jacob and Magdalena (ADD) were godparents to a Kerschner child.
ADH Unknown
Rev. Helffrich notes that Madgalena had six
children with Michael. A study of birth
dates of known children suggests that this unknown child was born about 1790.
ADI John
John
was born 12/28/1792 (shortly after the death of his father) and died
12/16/1882; his wife, Maria Margareth Daubenspeck, was born 1/16/1797 and died
3/9/1873. This data is reflected in
cemetery records for EBEN, actual gravestones at EBEN, NEL and other
sources.
FEG burial records show John,
born 12/12/1792 (note slight difference), died 12/16/1882, son of Michael
Kistler and wife Magdalena nee Mantz.
FEG notes that John married Magdalena Daubenspeck in 3/1817.
In addition to this direct link to Michael,
there are a number of indirect links reflected in baptismal records. EBEN baptismal records show that Melchoir
and Magdalena Schwab (John's step‑father and mother) sponsored one of
John's children (ADIB ‑‑ see below). His brother, Jacob (ADD) sponsored another of John's children
(ADIA ‑‑ see below). His
sister, Catherine (ADG), sponsored another of John's children (ADID ‑‑
see below).
The 1850 Census records for Lynn
township, Lehigh county, PA, show John, age 57; Maryade, age 53; Elizabeth, age
27; Catherine, age 25, and John, age 22.
ADIA Jacob
EBEN
baptismal records show Jacob, born 3/13/1817, son of John and Margaretha,
godparents Jacob and Magdalena (ADD).
EBEN cemetery records show Jacob, born 3/13/1818 (sic), died 4/18/1896,
and wife Lydia, born 11/24/1818, died 3/15/1901. It is likely that the cemetery records show the correct date of
birth; Jacob's parents were married in 3/1817, so Jacob's birth in 1818 is

shows that Jacob married Lydia Sensinger and reports her death date as
3/25/1901 ‑‑‑ a difference of ten days.

and refers to one son, deceased. FEG

I believe this is nothing more than a transcription error; "Tauber"
instead of "Dauben", an abbreviation for Daubenspeck (see also ADIC).

25, in the household of John Sensinger, age 59. The 1860 Census records for Lehigh county show Jacob, age 43; and
